Richard Alpert was the name of a collegue of Timothy Leary at Harvard. Alpert joined Leary in experimenting with LSD in the early 60's and went on with him and others to conduct experiments with large and varied groups of volunteers. Alpert stayed a defender of LSD after being kicked out of Harvard, when he went to India he had another type of mind altering experience that stuck with him. In his book "Remember, Be Here Now" he writes about the illusory nature of time and space

I like the concept of John "Locke" being the "key" to the island mystery. Also think Jack shepherd is the leader-caretaker, and Sawyer is in fact a grownup version of the original "tom". Sayid Jarrah - master butcher -right on. The same with Henry Gale and Daniel Faraday. Keep looking for other meanings for Desmond,Benjamin Linus, Hugo, Claire,Kate, and Richard. Some of these references are reching too far. I don't think the creators wanted us to work that hard. Am I wrong?

At one point in season 4, Ben gives Charlotte's full name: Charlotte Staples Lewis. We're probably all familiar with C. S. Lewis, right? His name was Clive Staples Lewis. Probably the most blatant reference in the entire series (in terms of name similarities)... Still trying to figure out why they would connect a avid-athiest-turned-avid-Christian author to a cultural anthropologist... Any ideas?

I thought that "Ethan Rom" was "Ethan Frome", like the eponymous character of the 1911 Edith Wharton novel. In Wharton's work, "Ethan’s character is one that comes full circle, moving from silent desire to action to quiet submission, ordered by life’s circumstances," (Wikipedia, 2009). I like the new arrangement of "Other man" though!

Actually, in regards to the 18th century thing, historians do sometimes define that century as the time between the Glorious Revolution and Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, which would make it fall between 1688 and 1815.
