Lots of things have been done with the Hulk comic over the decades, and some of them have apparently been interesting. But in this movie, Banner's me-versus-the-military quest, and his thing with the girlfriend/scientist are executed pretty much by-the-book (or paint-by-number), without the poignancy, emotional punch or surprises it would take to make this more than a hyperviolent popcorn flick. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but, hell, if you've GOT a cast like this ... Well, sure. It's not exactly a simple story and has allot to due with Banner's inner struggle against the monster that resides within him. This of course is not an original concept for movies but it is far more complex than a simple “Bad science; now he’s a monster”.
