I think that Marvel and DC Comics has gone to a new low because of those lousy story arcs by the likes of Civil War and Infinite crisis.

i was just starting to get into during that time. i had comics from the '80's (when they were only a dollar), but didn't really get into them, until the early issues of the x-men "new" series - the one that jim lee started working on. honestly, i fell for most of that crap, because i was that age; i went for the bad girls stuff (tho i resent dawn being lumped into that camp - the stories were always more cerebral than say, lady death or razor), i collected cards, the whole thing, really. but i never got them just because they were what was hot. i actually read them and enjoyed them - but i was 13, so i think i can be excused.
after i out grew that stuff, i tried to get rid of all my gen-13's and wildcats and such, but couldn't. i still have a lot of them because i'm a pack-rat and i hate to just throw them away... but because of that, i didn't touch major publishers for years. the only image book i would read was "the maxx". the only superhero book i've read since then is joss whedon's x-men title, which doesn't get into all the crap that the other titles do. i still love my comics, but i mostly buy collections and more small press stuff: poison elves, love and rockets, sin city, some of the vertigo stuff like the invisibles... there is hope out there, but you still have to dig for the good stuff and ignore what wizard says, for the most part (did you ever read the glowing "reviews" for a rip-off artist/hack like pat lee - http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Pat_Lee )and dig around for the good stuff.
the comics journal is a pretty good place to find real journalism on comics. it's published by fantagraphics, but they don't bow to the publisher and write what they actually think about the stuff that's out there.
and yeah, rob liefield has always and will always suck - from crude illustrations to lame character rip offs... i got a free copy of youngblood and saw wolverine and cable running around with "y's" on their chests, instead of "x's". really all of the image crew (with the exception of sam keith who is a cartoonist, not an illustrator, and maybe eric larson who was always big and over the top on purpose) were "surface" artists - guys that only care about the glitz of the art, not anything practical like anatomy or composition. at least mcfarland admits he was never a great artist (or has in the past).

Great Article! Brings back a lot of memories. I started with comics when I was 14 in '89 and quit because of all the gimmick crap around '95 or '96. I have been getting comics again, since 2006.

Any opinions on all those variant comics?

Also, I would love to read the rest of the story.
