snoop dogg & me

Snoop Dogg and John Marcotte

I’ve been using stock.xchng for a few years now. It’s a great source of user-contributed free stock photography. I’ve found images there for several projects, including Badmouth. In fact, it’s where I got the picture of the creepy doll heads for the banner.

Because I’d mooched quite a few pictures from there over the years, I decided to give back to the system and upload some of my own photos. A few weeks after I did this, I got an e-mail from a woman at EMI Music saying they were going to use one of my photos for a CD’s liner notes and asking how I would like to be credited. I said “John Marcotte” would be fine, and I asked what CD would my picture appear in. She immediately stopped responding to my e-mails and I never heard from her again.

The Best of Snoop DoggI told my wife that I would probably end up with the inside photo for “Bitches and Hos 3.” We laughed and forgot all about it. Then a few weeks ago I was Googling myself (which is nowhere near as dirty as it sounds), and I found out that I was credited with interior photography on the CD “The Best of Snoop Dogg .” They used my picture of a “Beware of Dog” sign. I can’t say I’m the worlds largest rap fan, but I know who Snoop is and I like some of his crossover stuff, so this was a pleasant surprise.

We figured that EMI didn’t want to tell us it was Snoop because they were afraid I’d demand to get paid. I can see that. But all I would have asked for was a free CD, maybe an autograph if I could get it. For me, it’s enough that I can say that I worked with Grammy Award-winning artist Snoop Dogg on a best-selling album…

…at least that’s how I’m putting it on my resume.

Yeah, working with Snoop really took my back to my old days in the hood where I was a straight-up gangster.

Thank God, I’ve left that world behind.

I mean seriously, people. It’s been like 100 degrees with the heat index lately, but I haven’t seen the ice cream man in over a week. What happened to American entrepreneurial spirit? What happened to cruising around, smoking pot and making a few bucks? What happened to my soft-serve sundae??!!!! All I know is someone is falling down on the ... [Link]

There have been so many misconceptions about the recent cover of The New Yorker that I felt compelled to address a few of them: It’s funny. I know there are people out there who think it isn’t, but they’re clearly wrong. It’s so patently ridiculous, it can’t help but bring a smile. The Obamas are not the subject of the ... [Link]

Oh Baby Daddy … He called again, and I didn’t realize it was him until had picked up. He was rather self-righteous about now having the time to ‘be involved.’ I told him he needs to write down specifically what that means to him and we would talk. But I am not giving an inch. He even got huffy b/c ... [Link]

Our mayor is taking part in this national push by municipalities to get people to ditch bottled water for tap water. It’s better for the environment, it’s cheaper, blah blah blah. Only problem is that our tap water is damn near undrinkable right now. It’s truly foul. It smells nearly as bad as it tastes. A shower leaves you feeling ... [Link]
