We all enjoyed it. Yes, it's not a deep epic like Mononoke Hime, or a thrilling romance like Howl's Moving Castle, or a bold anti-war statement like Nausicaa, but it does exactly what it set out to do, and that's a pretty big achievement right there. The comparison with Totoro holds up well. Personally, I found the end title to Totoro to be a lot less annoying than the end title to Ponyo, which was horribly jarring and didn't fit the movie at all, but I'm willing to bet that Disney stuck that awful music on in order to promote their latest factory-produced singer.
