Mollie,

Thanks for commenting. Well, I think that if we pretended we lived in a perfect world, those things we "judge" would seem even more flawed, and then I'd have to give everything a really terrible review.

The film has its good points, but it's mediocre overall, and I can't just ignore that. I mean, I assume everyone who makes a movie is trying to make a good movie. Should we all just give them 5 stars for effort?

This is why an entire generation of American kids/young adults is so screwed up -- decades of schooling that doesn't try to hold them to standards. I could award this movie a bumper sticker that says "My Son's Movie Is a Good Neighbor in the Hollywood Machine," but who does that help?

Let's call the good stuff good, the bad stuff bad, and hope all of us try a little harder on the next thing.

Seriously? Look, I know this is from a whileeee ago and everything but the point of this movie wasn't to win an Oscar. It's supposed to teach kids about the importance of other living things. Frikin hell, screw the quality of the movie - kids can't tell the difference. It did a lot of good and in a perfect world, thats what counts. And even though we don't live in one, shouldn't we start judging as if we were living in a perfect world?

I already have Planet Earth in HD at home. Doesn't sound like they added anything to this to make it better except a Disney logo.

Hey Jon -- thanks for asking. I try to get to that point in the last paragraph, but I'm a bit oblique about it. I think that the big-screen experience of some of this amazing photography added a star, or half a star, to a production that's two, at best 2.5 stars for storytelling. I think if you're seeing it on anything less than a kick-ass big-screen TV, that small and occasional "wow" factor will be lost.

It's kinda hard to do the this-many-stars thing when the film has aspects that truly suck as well as aspects that are pretty good. Hope this makes it a little clearer ...

From what I've read of your review it sounds like this film deserves less than a 3 stars. Was there anything worthwhile about this film that would prompt you to give it a 3 rather than a 2?
