Hellboy II got its ass handed to it thanks to The Dark Knight’s stellar debut. It’s a shame Hellboy opened only a week before Batman—it was going to be hard enough to hold market share anywhere in this summer of superheroes, but having this Batman cut into your box office after [...]

PART ONE: Volumes 1-4

With a new, higher-profile Hellboy movie in theaters today, it seems like a great time to consider the series of graphic novels that inspired Guillermo Del Toro’s productions. In part one, we look at the four collecting material published before the first Hellboy film, which debuted in 2004.
Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comic [...]

With this summer's second superhero sequel—Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer—opening in mere days, it seemed like a good time to check out the inspiration for the new film. The Silver Surfer first appeared in Fantastic Four #48, in a riotous story of cosmic proportions that spread over all or part of three issues. The Surfer was the herald of the world-devouring creature Galactus< ?a>, and his arrival on our world was a harbinger of doom. The FF alone stand against the alien invaders and save the planet.

This storyline, perhaps the most famous in the FF's 46-year run, is the exact opposite of the first “Fantastic Four” film—it is breathlessly exciting, relentlessly paced and executed on a grand scale that pushed the limits of its medium. The first movie had two significant handicaps: A fair amount of time had to be devoted just to getting the team empowered (a key reason the excellent first “Spider Man” was surpassed by the Doc Ock sequel), and the project had gone through so many writers and directors that a mess was inevitable. The new FF film has none of that behind-the-scenes chaos, and there's certainly nothing to handicap the story—it's drawn from a classic example of the absolute glory of superhero comics.

The early nineties saw a period in comic-book history where the industry almost comitted suicide through greed, arrogance and stupidity. I was a lifetime comics buyer at that point. Moving from Spider-Man to the X-Men, to the Tick and beyond.

Then the speculators came. And like the sports card market before it, comic-books went to hell. People were buying the books not because they loved them, but because they thought they could make a profit reselling them. This encouraged the industry to pump out gimicks.

First issues were more collectable? Start more titles -- or better yet, cancel a title that has been running since the '60s then restart it the next month at #1. People were buying more than one copy? Release six "variant" covers of every issue. Kill Superman. Cripple Batman. Give Spider-Man an evil clone. Holograms. Foil embossing. Die-cut covers. Every dirty trick in the book was tried to make consumers buy comics they didn't love and didn't need (except improving quality.) And it worked.

For a while.

I first stumbled across noun's story in the forums at Quarter to Three, a videogame site. Like myself, noun was a comic-book affectionado during the early nineties. On top of getting sucked up in the speculator hype as a consumer, noun also started dealing a little on the side.

The seductuve lure of the speculator bubble eventually lead to ruin and damnation for hundreds of dealers and almost all of the small publishing companies folded.

So read along as noun gives you the play by play from his courtside seats at the comic-book apocalypse.
