badmouth 2.0

July 9th, 2005 by John Marcotte

Well this is the kind of post that most people will ignore, but I’m plowing ahead and putting it up here anyway.

I redesigned Badmouth. The site is now dynamically generated via Wordpress. It contains zero tables. And if Internet Explorer didn’t suck like a five-dollar whore at closing time, the site would also validate as pure XHTML. But Internet Explorer doesn’t work right. At all.

So if you want to see rounded corners, transparent images and other niceness, get a real browser. I recommend Firefox.

Old LookNew features on Badmouth include:

  • Subscriptions to comments so you can follow your arguments more closely.
  • Gravatars: Global avatars so you can pick an icon to represent yourself in the comments.
  • Better archives, including category breakdowns.

There are tons of other features that you can’t see, but that make my life easier. And I’ll be adding even more functionality in the future. All the old stories have been imported in, and I know that many of them will need reformatting to work in the new design. I’ll get to it.

If any of you spot an honest to goodness bug, drop me a line: john@badmouth.net. I’ll fix it as soon as a can.

I’m interested in your feedback. So leave some comments if you get chance.

I’ve got to say, I’m super-confused about the Rev. Jeremiah Wright dust-up. I’m saying this stuff through an Obama-colored lens, I’ll admit — but in no particular order: Obama didn’t say any of this stuff, his preacher did. Compare and contrast this with the Bosnian sniper fire incident that Hillary Clinton seems to have gotten away with. Since when does ... [Link]

Since Best Buy changed their Reward Zone program for the worse, I’ve been shopping at Amazon.com a lot more. Since I’m cheap, I like to use their free shipping option when I can, which utilizes the United States Postal Service as a carrier. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried tracking a package at the USPS site, but I’ve found ... [Link]

Take a look at the last item in this image, and you’ll see one of my complaints about the state of the news media in the U.S. A long time ago, in a Midwest city far, far, away, I was a journalist of sorts. I worked at a real daily newspaper, writing and editing real news stories. Things were starting ... [Link]

You Are My Baby Daddy In week seven, I ran into Baby Daddy at his work. I knew I would see him at some point; it’s hard to avoid a movie theater when you like the movies. I felt awkward. He didn’t notice. And I thought, and obsessed, and finally decided that he had a right to know. It seemed ... [Link]
